Invaluable Insight: The Patient & Family Advisory Council
At Monadnock Community Hospital, the care of our patients — as well as their loved ones — is the center of conversation for the Patient & Family Advisory Council (PFAC). Re-established in 2022, PFAC members have worked to represent the voice of the patients and families in MCH initiatives, while learning more about our organization and becoming positive, informed community ambassadors.
PFAC members provide personal feedback, helping MCH leaders to better understand patient perspectives and strengthen the relationship between MCH and the community we serve. To date, the PFAC has contributed to a variety of projects, including MCH’s 100th anniversary, patient educational materials, website pages, and consent forms. PFAC members have gained a deeper understanding of MCH’s programs and services, allowing the group to offer valuable input from a community perspective.

The River Center: Strengthening Our Community, One Family at a Time
Being a community hospital means building strong bonds with our community partners. We are happy to recognize the incredible contributions the River Center has made to the place we call home. As we step into the new year, it's a perfect time to reflect on the incredible work being done by The River Center and how it continues to make a difference in the lives of individuals and families across the Eastern Monadnock Region.Their Mission and Your Needs:
Since its inception in the 1990s, The River Center has evolved to become a designated Family Resource Center of Quality (FRC-Q). The River Center believes everyone deserves to thrive. That's why they provide parent education, family support, and community connections in a welcoming environment. They understand the challenges and changing needs of our community, and their programs and services are designed to address them head-on.Building Strong Families:
Everyone from Newborns to Grandparents and Households of One Connection is a major concern for families today and The River Center is addressing that need in many ways. They help individuals grow, learn, and connect. They offer a wide range of programs to support families at every stage. From family support, early home support, and parent and caregiver assistance, to youth programs, kinship support, financial coaching, tax preparation, and the valuable FACT book – the center is a wellspring of resources tailored to our community's needs. The impact of The River Center is best highlighted through stories like Melissa French's, who has accessed their resources for over a decade "The River Center has been there for me every step of the way," she says. "They've helped me with everything from fuel assistance to taxes. They truly make a difference in people's lives." From the Baby and Me group to financial coaching, Melissa attests to the profound impact the center has had on her life. Securing a Legacy of Compassionate Care: Explore Planned Giving with The Parmelee Society
Your will or estate plan is a testament to your values and aspirations. For many, the inclusion of charitable giving in these plans is a powerful way to contribute to a better world for future generations. Planned Gifts come in various sizes, ranging from $1,000 to $1,000,000 or more, providing individuals with diverse options for making a lasting impact. These options include making a bequest, utilizing retirement plan assets, exploring charitable gift annuities, donating real estate, or even using stocks and mutual funds for charitable contributions. The Parmelee Society: Honoring Your Commitment to Community Health
The Parmelee Society is a distinguished group that recognizes and honors individuals who have chosen to include Monadnock Community Hospital (MCH) in their will or estate plan. Embracing a legacy that spans a hundred years, this society embodies a commitment to supporting community healthcare, mirroring the spirit of philanthropy displayed by Mr. Robert Parmelee in 1919. Mr. Parmelee's legacy began when he generously donated his summer home to the town of Peterborough, establishing the inaugural "Peterboro Hospital" in memory of his late wife, Alice. Today, the Parmelee Society carries forward this tradition of altruism.A Tradition of Appreciation and Recognition: Benefits of Including MCH in your Will or Estate Planning
As a valued member of The Parmelee Society, you will experience a host of benefits, including a special invitation to our annual Parmelee Society reception. This exclusive event provides an opportunity to connect with our hospital leaders and Trustees, fostering a sense of community among like-minded individuals dedicated to advancing healthcare in the Monadnock Region. In addition to the reception, Parmelee Society members are duly recognized in our Annual Report and prominently displayed on our giving wall in the main lobby. This public acknowledgment serves as a testament to your commitment and inspires others to follow in your philanthropic footsteps.![Laura Gingras Laura Gingras](https://monadnockcommunityhospital.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Executive-Team-Headshot-Laura-A.-Gingras-360x360.png)

CVTC Volunteer Driver Program Seeking New Drivers Through CVTC New Driver Challenge
Since its establishment in 2008, The Community Volunteer Transportation Company (CVTC) has been on a mission to provide rides to non-emergency medical or social service appointments, including the grocery store, bank, post office and pharmacy for those in the community needing assistance with transportation. Their mission to optimize the health, well-being and independence for community members is ongoing and expanding daily. CVTC is excited to strengthen services and is seeking community support in the form of drivers for their organization through the introduction of the CVTC New Driver Challenge. While CVTC has made remarkable progress, they are facing a challenge. To meet their goals and serve the community even better, they need more volunteer drivers. Their New Driver Challenge aims to recruit ten new drivers by the end of this year. Currently, CVTC has 65 drivers, with an average of 55 actively serving the community each month. In 2023, they have provided an average of 3,600 rides, approximately 11 rides per day. However, some trips remain unfulfilled due to various reasons, including a lack of available drivers. In 2022, 14% of rides went uncompleted, and the year-end projection for 2023 is approximately 400 rides not completed which equals 11.5%, highlighting the critical need for additional drivers. In 2023, CVTC is projected to drive over 130,000 miles, an impressive feat that showcases the significant impact of their services on the community. If you're wondering why you should become a CVTC volunteer driver, the answer lies in the benefits and the profound sense of community you'll experience. As a volunteer driver, you'll receive mileage reimbursement, which helps cover your expenses. More importantly, you can select trips that match your availability, allowing you to contribute at your own pace while building connections with members of the community. CVTC receives annual support from both Monadnock Community Hospital and Cheshire Medical Center, emphasizing the community's collective commitment to this valuable service. CVTC has also been recognized for its outstanding efforts, earning the prestigious Nonprofit of the Year award from the Peterborough Chamber of Commerce in 2021. Volunteer Spotlight: Mary Frances Lawler, A Legacy of Dedication and Compassion at Monadnock Community Hospital
For over a decade, Mrs. Mary Frances Lawler has dedicated herself to MCH, accumulating an astounding 2,225 hours of service since 2012. Her presence on the MCH campus is synonymous with a warm smile and a heart full of compassion. Her service to patients and our community begins long before 2012 though, as she first filled her life with a career in nursing. Residing in Jaffrey, Mrs. Lawler's connection with MCH runs deep, interwoven with the hospital's history and mission of exceptional care. Her journey as a nurse traces back to her mother, who served as a night supervisor nurse at the hospital. This familial connection ignited her passion for nursing, leading her to start as a volunteer at MCH during her high school years. Determined to pursue her dreams, she worked at the 5 & 10 in Jaffrey to save for nursing school. Her educational path took her to the Carney Hospital School for Nurses and ultimately to a bachelor's degree in Rehabilitation Nursing from St. Anselm. She then landed a 50-year nursing career, including four decades at Crotched Mountain Rehabilitation Center. Throughout her career, she garnered numerous nursing awards, accolades, and letters praising her kindness, dedication, and lasting impact, a testament to her exceptional skills and unwavering dedication. As a mentor, Mrs. Lawler passed on her wisdom to the next generation of nurses, instilling in them the importance of going above and beyond for patients. Beyond her professional achievements, Mrs. Lawler has given back to her community in many ways, such as receiving a 30-year pin for her work with the Red Cross's Bloodmobile. Today, Mrs. Lawler continues her selfless journey as a volunteer in the hospital's Human Resources department. Her presence is celebrated with words like “Magnificent Amazing Resourceful Youthful, and Loyal Awesome Wonderful Loving Enthusiastic Reliable,” spelling out her name on a bulletin board, reflecting the impact she makes every day. "I go by the rules, and I don't fail," Mrs. Lawler declares with characteristic determination. Her journey has come full circle, from working as a nurse in a room next to the office where she now volunteers, showcasing her enduring bond with the hospital. Her reflection on MCH echoes its commitment to compassion and friendliness. Mrs. Lawler emphasizes that there's always a warm "good morning" from the staff, reinforcing the hospital's dedication to creating a supportive environment. Monadnock Community Hospital proudly salutes Mary Frances Lawler for her exceptional contributions to patient care, community well-being, and support for our staff. She embodies MCH's values, and her unwavering dedication continues to inspire us all. To join Mrs. Lawler and our incredible team of volunteers at Monadnock Community Hospital, please contact Toni Gildone, Volunteer Coordinator, at (603)924-7191 x4190. A Heartwarming Journey of Birth, Dedication, and Return at Monadnock Community Hospital
It's an exciting milestone year for Monadnock Community Hospital as it celebrates its 100th anniversary! Over the past century there have been many inspiring stories shared from those who were born at the hospital, patients who received excellent care, and employees who call the hospital their home away from home. This heartwarming story encapsulates it all, truly coming full circle. Monadnock Community Hospital is delighted to introduce Jackie Coll, who has been a member of the hospital's dedicated team for over a decade. Born as a twin in the maternity ward of MCH in the 80s, she later gave birth to both of her children in MCH’s Birthing Suite. Jackie started with the organization at New Ipswich Family Medicine, however, after a slight career change, she took a new role in a different capacity. As a member of the Information Technology team, her office is now the room that she was born in! “When our OB unit changed locations within MCH, the old unit rooms were transformed into offices that now house MCH’s IT department where I currently work,” Jackie explains. “The excitement of MCH’s 100th year anniversary inspired my mom and I to look at my old birth photos. To our incredible surprise my office is the very room I started life in! It brings me great honor to work in such a wonderful hospital that has always been and continues to bes an enormous part of my life.” With a background in nursing and information technology, Jackie brings a wealth of experience and a passion for making a positive impact in the lives of patients. This remarkable journey from birth to professional fulfillment encapsulates the hospital's commitment to nurturing and supporting individuals at every stage of life. "This is a rare and wonderful occurrence," says Cyndee McGuire, President and CEO of Monadnock Community Hospital. "To have an individual born within our walls return years later to work in the same room where they were first cared for as an infant is a testament to the deep-rooted connections that our hospital fosters within the community." The hospital's centennial year continues to be a time of reflection, gratitude, and forward-looking initiatives. As Monadnock Community Hospital remains committed to providing exceptional care and support to the community, Jackie’s story embodies the spirit of healthcare excellence, community engagement, and compassionate service that has defined the hospital for the past 100 years. Jackie's journey serves as a reminder that the bonds formed within these walls extend far beyond the walls themselves.![Congratulations to the Gosline Scholarship Winners Congratulations to the Gosline Scholarship Winners](https://monadnockcommunityhospital.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Blue-And-Yellow-Modern-Summer-Scholarship-Program-Flyer.png)

MCH Celebrates 27th Annual Golf Tournament, Raising Over $81K for Financial Assistance Program
Monadnock Community Hospital’s 27th Annual Fall Foliage Golf Classic was an incredible success and raised over $81,000, thanks to the tremendous support of over 50 corporate and individual sponsors. Featuring 133 players, and supported by 30 volunteers, this year’s tournament was held on September 8th at Crotched Mountain Golf Club in Francestown. Funds raised annually through the tournament contribute to MCH’s Financial Assistance Program, which supports around 1,800 patients each year who need help to pay their medical bills. In 2022, MCH provided $16,817,000 through community benefit programs, with over $480,000 going to the MCH Financial Assistance Program. MCH extends a grateful “Thank You” to Hutter Construction, who has been the tournament’s major sponsor for the past 17 years. “We are so grateful to Hutter Construction and all of our sponsors for their generous support of MCH. The Tournament was the last in a series of special Centennial Events celebrating 100years since the Hospital doors opened in June, 1923. Thanks to community support, our hospital is stronger than ever as we head into our second century of caring for our community!” said Cyndee McGuire, President and CEO of MCH. IRA Minimum Distribution
Donate Through Your IRA for a Tax-Free Way to Support MCH! Individuals 70 1/2 and older can donate all, or a portion of, their annual Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) directly to MCH. Since RMDs are considered ordinary income, this distribution may push an individual into a higher tax bracket even if they do not need the additional income. A Qualified Charitable Distribution allows charitable distributions from an IRA to be sent directly to a qualified charity, like MCH. This allows the donor to exclude the gift amount from their taxable income and they do not need to pay income taxes on the distribution either! If you aren’t dependent on your IRA for income this year, please consider contributing your Required Minimum Distribution to MCH. It is a simple and an excellent tax-effective way to support your community hospital! For more information, please call Laura Gingras at (603) 924-4666. Learn more.Get the Latest Updates!

A Letter From Cyndee
Hello, Happy 100 Years! Thanks to generous philanthropic support over the past century, MCH is entering our 101st year stronger than ever. We are very fortunate to have so much community engagement, most recently seen at our Centennial Community Celebration day that was held on June 3rd and attended by over 900 community members. A family-friendly celebration that showcased the care and dedication of this incredible community was enjoyed by all who attended. Thank you for being part of our MCH Family and for continuing to make the hospital a priority in your life! We are excited to continue our mission of improving the health and well-being of our community by delivering accessible, high-quality and value-based care. I am happy to report that MCH is in a strong position both operationally and financially. We are honored to have welcomed new clinicians and services to our hospital over the past year and to be bringing back our Health and Wellness Educational Seminars this fall. You’ll read more about all of these topics throughout this newsletter as well as our 100th anniversary updates, the new Healing Arts Gallery exhibit, the new patient portal access page, our new spine surgery program, the grand opening of the Medical Eye Center, and more! I hope you will take time this summer to spend with your loved ones and enjoy all the activities this region has to offer. Rest assured, MCH will be here when you need us. We cannot thank you enough for your support. A time of expansion in the hospital’s history.
[gallery columns="4" ids="37074,37072,37071,37070"] MCH Anniversary Series 1971-1991The early years of the Hospital saw significant advances in the science of anesthesia, from the introduction of anesthesia machines in the 1930s to new, safer anesthetic drugs, devices that made intubation safer and more effective, and the introduction of the first intravenous anesthetics.
1950s$2 office visit

($36.43 adjusted)
In the 1950s Dr. Albert Chandler performed house calls which equaled his time spent in office appointments. He charged $2 per office visit ($24.29 adjusted rate today) or $3 per house call ($36.43 adjusted.)
Early on the Hospital was made to look as much like a cheerful home as possible, with a small kitchen on each floor. The rooms had fireplaces and carpets for comfort. The reception room had comfortable seating and often had fresh flowers. The old reception room is now the library and looks much the same.
Average per patient day during 1960s inflation:
Short term, general, and special hospitals
$41.58 ($397.67 adjusted*)
MCH
$38.84 ($371.46 adjusted*)
In the 1960s rapid population growth in the Monadnock region led to a hospital census at 100%. There was a shortage of patient rooms available. A fundraising campaign for a major million dollar expansion began in 1963. The average contribution from the community was $940 ($8,990.08 adjusted*) from doctors, $320 ($3,060.45 adjusted*) from small businesses, $97 ($927.70 adjusted*) from local families, and $75 ($717.29 adjusted*) from employees. On March 23, 1965 groundbreaking ceremonies were held. The addition increased capacity to 75 beds from the 1949 expansion leaving MCH with 55 beds.
1963 capital campaign average contributions:
Doctors $940 ($8,990.08 adjusted*)
Small businesses $320 ($3,060.45 adjusted*)
Local families $97 ($927.70 adjusted*)
Employees $75 ($717.29 adjusted*)
At the close of the fundraising campaign Dr. George Stewart said: “We are aware not only of the out-poured generosity of the living givers but, at the same time, are reminded also of the superb people who have befriended this institution in years that are gone and who have left us as grateful legatees some portion of their spirit. Over and above that material resources given by such citizens is the sense of trusteeship, the responsibility for the common good, the traits of character they have bestowed to help build in the community its distinguishing character as a worthy region. For all of these we are truly grateful.”
In the 1960s the Hospital’s Auxiliary supplied 5-inch television sets that could be rolled into patient rooms on a cart for $1 a day ($9.89 adjusted*). In 1964 the New Hampshire Philharmonic Orchestra began playing a benefit for the hospital each year. In 1968 a Chrysanthemum Ball was first held as a fundraiser. They were the first black tie, gala raising funds for MCH. The attendance fee was $10 per person ($84.10 adjusted*). In 1973 the Golden Anniversary Ball celebrated the 50th anniversary.

Providers from Antrim Fire and Ambulance, Dublin Fire Department, Francestown Fire Department, Greenfield Fire Department, Hancock Fire Department, Jaffrey Fire Department, Jaffrey-Rindge Memorial Ambulance, New Ipswich Fire Department, Peterborough Fire and Rescue, Rindge Fire Department, Souhegan Valley Ambulance, and Temple Fire Department attended the evening’s event at the Monadnock Country Club, where they were honored as vital members of the community. Doctors, physician assistants, and nurses from the MCH Emergency Department were there as well to celebrate their colleagues and friends. Cyndee McGuire, president and CEO of Monadnock Community Hospital, recognized all of the hard work the local EMS providers do every day. She quoted Fred Rogers from Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood by saying “Fred Rogers is famous for his advice, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’ I look out tonight at a sea of helpers. You are often first on the scene to care for people in their greatest time of need. The dedication you have for our neighbors and loved ones is incredibly admirable and we are lucky to have you all as a part of our MCH Family and our community.” Lauren Morton, Physician Assistant, and a leader in the MCH Emergency Room, thanked everyone for their tireless efforts and for continually giving so much of themselves to help the lives of others. She then had the privilege of presenting the 2023 EMS Lifetime Achievement Award to New Ipswich Fire Department’s Chief Meredith Lund. Chief Lund, who is soon retiring after over 30 years of service to our community, moved up the ranks in this male dominated profession. She started her career with Souhegan Valley Ambulance Service and later became the first female on the New Ipswich Fire Department team. In 2016 she was voted in as the Chief becoming one of only four female Fire Chiefs in the state of New Hampshire and the first in New Ipswich. Chief Lund was surprised and moved by this award and she presented an inspiring acceptance speech with a brief overview of her career. She shared that she is retiring to spend more time with her grandchildren and to travel the country as she continues her work fighting wildfires. She thanked all of her colleagues and friends in the room, some of whom she taught when she was an instructor with the NH Fire Academy & EMS, while others she began her training with in the early 1990s and has been friends with ever since. The Annual EMS Recognition event was the first one held since 2019 (before the pandemic) and Monadnock Community Hospital was pleased to be able to honor the community Emergency Medical Services this way.![Donna Infante, RN, MCH’s Emergency Department Director; Lauren Morton, PA, Emergency Department Physician Assistant; New Ipswich Fire Chief Meredith Lund; Dr. Eric Lasky, MD, MCH’s EMS Director; Michael Greenough, MCH’s EMS Coordinator](https://monadnockcommunityhospital.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/349342342_812147730278198_6449812223451079338_n-1080x906.jpg)

The early formative years of the hospital’s history.

"The Peterborough Hospital, which opens its doors to the public today, Thursday, June 21st, is something which has been in the minds and thoughts of some of our citizens for a long time and at last the realizations of these plans and dreams have come to pass..."
The highly anticipated opening day of The Peterborough Hospital was a monumental occasion. Over 750 people attended the festivities on opening day to see the new facility that would become a center for medical excellence in the Monadnock region. A visiting physician toured the newly built hospital and told the Peterborough Transcript:
“A finer location, better arranged, more completely equipped, up to the minute, modern hospital than this one cannot be found anywhere.”
At this time there were 47 consulting physicians that came to the Hospital from all over New England, as far away as Boston. They would take the train into town. The most common vehicle at the time was the Model T.
In the first month (1923)- 4 births
- 9 average patients a day
- 36 operations
- 40 patients admitted
- 274 patient days
Within the first 11 months of operation, it was clear that the Peterborough Hospital was a needed service for the community, with patient numbers increasing daily. During this time there were an average of nine patients per day at the hospital. (Patients days are defined as a calendar day a patient is admitted in the hospital.) The first baby born was a healthy boy from Nashua, he was born at 3 AM on July 1, 1923 by Caesarean section. In the first 15 years of operation (ending in 1938) there were 7,525 persons admitted, and 80,559 patient days total.
In 1927 nine towns accepted a share in the future maintenance of the hospital. The breakdown of the amount pledged by each town follows: Peterborough $68,225.35 ($1,147,502.68 adjusted*), Jaffrey $12,751 ($214,462.90 adjusted*), Dublin $12,750 ($214,446.08 adjusted*), Hancock $3,501 ($58,884.3 adjusted*), Antrim $3,295.50 ($55,428.01 adjusted*), Bennington $2,056 ($34,580.48 adjusted*), Temple $1,224.25 ($20,591.03 adjusted*), Greenfield $655 ($11,016.64 adjusted*), and Harrisville $53.25 ($895.63 adjusted*). The community support from these surrounding towns set the framework for what would be incredible philanthropic support for decades to come.
Hospital Stats: 1923- 2903 patient days

- 43 births
- 1675 patient days
- 1844 admissions

In the 1940s it was common practice for hearses to be used as ambulances. Funeral homes handled ambulance calls as well as funeral transportation. The vehicles were bought as combination hearses/ambulances. Arthur Wheeler of Jellison Funeral Home never lost a patient in transit despite only having Red Cross first aid training.
1946 was a time of transformation and growth as the Peterborough Hospital changed its name to Monadnock Community Hospital. There was a continuing need for increased services, with the hospital running full census (full capacity) in 1934. The tight finances during World War II made expansion a challenge. By 1946 the Hospital was often beyond capacity. The community donated food from their victory gardens, and raised money with donations, benefits, bequests, investments, state funds, and more. In 1949 the North Wing addition began, which was going to increase the hospital’s bed capacity from 19 beds to 55. When the North Wing was completed in 1950 Monadnock Community Hospital was considered one of the finest in New England.

The history of Monadnock Community Hospital goes all the way back to 1917 when community members asked Robert Parmelee to donate his unoccupied summer home to the town of Peterborough to become a community hospital. In 1873 the first American hospital survey located only 178 hospitals in the country. People who were ill were treated at home or went to the poorhouse/almshouse. Household medicine was nearly identical to hospital treatment. In the early 20th century major scientific advances were made in germ theory, antiseptic surgery, clinical pathology, x-ray, and more. Acute care was centered in hospitals, such as the ones closest to Peterborough in Keene, Nashua, and Fitchburg, MA. There was little chance for a rapid medical response or immediate physician contact in our small rural community. In 1915 Robert M Parmelee and his wife Alice Elizabeth Parker Parmelee began to build Evergreen, their summer home in Peterborough. It was situated on 70 acres with a beautiful view of Monadnock. Site work was a labor-intensive operation in the early 1900s. Horse power went hand in hand with manual labor. In 1917 the home’s value was assessed at $35,776 ($353,718.08 adjusted*): “It can be established that it will be supported by the people of Peterborough and the adjacent country, if they can be made to feel that it is theirs and so conducted that they (the residents) will be proud of it.” – Robert Parmelee World War I slowed progress on the fundraising and conversion of the home to a hospital. In December 1918, 185 generous community members pledged $10,330.40 ($200,215.35 adjusted*) for each year over a period of five years. In March 1919 Mrs. Benjamin P. Cheney and Mrs. Elizabeth C. Kauffman underwrote the entire $200,000 ($3,876,236.20 adjusted*) needed to renovate the Parmelee house and equip it as a hospital. Robert Parmelee wrote, “I am so glad to have my friends and neighbors share with me in this, which will make us all, I trust, better neighbors, better friends.” On March 28, 1919 the first meeting of the Peterborough Hospital Corporation was held. After many contributions from the war-burdened community and the efforts of many committee members and skilled craftsmen, the Peterborough Hospital opened its doors to begin caring for the community on June 21, 1923. There were few rural communities the size of the Monadnock region that could boast having its own modern hospital.Room rates 1923: | ||
