Keeping the Beat: Understanding Atrial Fibrillation

Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is one of the most common heart rhythm disorders, affecting an estimated 10 million Americans. It occurs when the upper chambers of the heart beats in an irregular, disorganized pattern, and many people don’t know they have it until symptoms become serious or a complication like stroke occurs.

In this Health & Wellness Seminar, Brooke O’Connor, APRN, and Robert Spencer, MD, of Monadnock Cardiology Associates provide a clear, comprehensive overview of AFib, from how it develops to how it is diagnosed and treated.

The seminar covers:

  • What AFib is and how it affects the heart’s electrical system
  • The difference between paroxysmal, persistent, longstanding persistent, and permanent AFib
  • Risk factors you can and cannot control, including hypertension, obesity, sleep apnea, diabetes, and alcohol use
  • Symptoms to watch for and how AFib is diagnosed, including ECG, cardiac event monitors, and wearable devices
  • The connection between AFib and stroke risk, and how risk is assessed using the CHA2DS2-VASc scoring tool
  • Anticoagulation options, including DOACs and warfarin, and when each is appropriate
  • Rate control vs. rhythm control strategies, including medications, cardioversion, and catheter ablation
  • Lifestyle modifications that can reduce AFib burden and improve quality of life

This seminar was recorded in recognition of American Heart Month and reflects MCH’s commitment to bringing trusted cardiovascular expertise directly to our community.
