Pelvic Perspectives: Understanding Your Body’s Foundation Seminar

October 24, 2024

Presenter: Corryn Nelson, PT, DPT

Pelvic health plays a crucial role in supporting your overall well-being, yet it’s often an overlooked aspect of health care. At Monadnock Community Hospital, we recently hosted a seminar titled Pelvic Perspectives: Understanding Your Body’s Foundation,” led by Corryn Nelson, PT, DPT. This seminar aimed to shed light on the importance of the pelvic floor and provide practical insights for maintaining pelvic wellness.

Summary Notes

The Role of the Pelvic Floor

The pelvic floor consists of a group of muscles and connective tissues that provide foundational support for your internal organs, aid in continence, and help manage intra-abdominal pressure. According to Nelson, maintaining a healthy pelvic floor is vital for overall bladder and bowel control, sexual function, and quality of life. Factors such as pregnancy, childbirth, and age-related changes can impact pelvic health, making it an essential area of focus.

Strategies for Incontinence and Lifestyle Adjustments

The seminar delved into the different types of incontinence, including stress and urge incontinence. Nelson emphasized the importance of controlling fluid intake, recognizing irritants, and performing targeted pelvic floor exercises like Kegels. Along with exercise, maintaining balanced fiber intake, proper hydration, and correct posture can positively influence pelvic health.

Prolapse Awareness and Prevention

Understanding pelvic organ prolapse and taking steps to prevent it was another key focus of the seminar. Nelson outlined the symptoms of various types of prolapses and stressed preventive measures like avoiding heavy lifting and using proper breathing techniques.

Holistic Approaches to Pelvic Pain

Pelvic and back pain are often interrelated, requiring a holistic approach to address muscle imbalances and nerve irritation. Nelson explained that tailored exercises and mindfulness techniques like diaphragmatic breathing can aid in relieving symptoms and promoting circulation.

The Path to Better Pelvic Health

The seminar emphasized the importance of proactive steps in maintaining pelvic health, such as open communication with healthcare providers and practical tips for improving daily habits. Nelson concluded the seminar with specific exercises like the cat-cow stretch and inner thigh stretches to help enhance mobility and alleviate discomfort.
