One Sunday night, Jeanne Henriques drove through the dark toward the hospital, not knowing what was ahead. What her family found when they arrived changed how she thinks about this community forever.

An Unexpected Emergency

One Sunday night, Jeanne Henriques faced a moment no grandparent ever expects.

Her son was visiting from Australia with her 7-year-old grandson when a medical emergency suddenly unfolded. In the darkness, Jeanne drove toward the hospital, navigating unfamiliar conditions and rising concern.

And then she saw it.

“When I came down the hill and saw the hospital all lit up, I immediately thought, ‘Thankfully, we are already here.’”

Help Close to Home

Because of community support, that light was on.

“I thought about what it would have meant to keep driving, another hour, late at night, not knowing how my grandson was feeling or what the roads ahead would bring,” Jeanne shared. “But I didn’t have to wonder for long because I had the hospital there. Right there.”

Care Comes First

When they arrived at the Emergency Department, another concern surfaced. Jeanne’s son did not have a U.S. insurance card. They were visiting from abroad, and uncertainty quickly set in.

Instead of hesitation, they were met with reassurance.

“Don’t worry. We’ll take good care of him.”

Care came first.

Her grandson was seen within minutes. Skilled clinicians were ready. Equipment was available. Compassion guided every interaction.

“From that moment on, I found myself appreciating our community hospital more than ever before,” she said. “My grandson received excellent care that day and was back to his fun self in no time. MCH is at the heart of this community, and I am so grateful to the people whose generosity makes that possible. Each time I’ve been treated here, it feels like home.”
