What Hiyam has to say

Restoring Strength and Confidence: Hiyam’s Journey

Dr. Brian Kwitkin, a board-certified general surgeon, stands beside Hiyam Makarios in an examination room at Monadnock Community Hospital. Dr. Kwitkin is wearing a white coat and smiling, while Hiyam, sitting on the examination chair, wears a black-and-white patterned dress and glasses. They are surrounded by medical equipment, highlighting the hospital’s commitment to advanced surgical care.

Dr. Brian Kwitkin, board-certified general surgeon, arrived at Monadnock Surgical Associates in 2023, and he is already having a positive impact on our community, and on the lives of people like Hiyam Makarios.

When the former high school teacher from Rindge became concerned by a painful bulge in her belly, she went to the Emergency Department at Monadnock Community Hospital. Our expert team diagnosed her with an umbilical (or belly button) hernia and referred her to Monadnock Surgical Associates.

“Dr. Kwitkin’s temperament was so calming which gave me confidence that I was in great hands. He showed me exactly what my condition was, explained how he was going to fix it, and answered all of my questions,” Hiyam says.

One benefit of having her surgery close to home was that Hiyam had connections to members of her care team. She explains, “One of the nurses is the mother of a former student of mine!” And she made new connections. “It turned out that my anesthesiologist is originally from Canada, just like me, so we were able to converse in French.” Hiyam praises the entire team for her exceptional care. “It’s because of Dr. Kwitkin and his nurses that I have been able to strengthen my stomach muscles and return to my normal life. Everything was perfect and I am proud to say Dr. Kwitkin was my surgeon.”

“Everything was perfect and I am proud to say Dr. Kwitkin was my surgeon.”

What Rosamond has to say

Partners in Progress, Healing with Purpose

“All good and positive outcomes are a team effort,” says Rosamond Cady of Harrisville.

After a serious injury last spring resulted in broken bones, a hernia, and chronic pain, Rosamond became the center of a collaborative care team at Monadnock Community Hospital—one dedicated to helping her return to a vibrant, active life.

It began with Dr. Brian Kwitkin and the surgical team at Monadnock Surgical Associates, who successfully repaired her hernia. Then came orthopedic care with Dr. Vache Hambardzumyan of Monadnock Orthopaedic Associates. “Dr. Vache simply wowed me with his humble, gentle approach,” she reflects. “He told me, ‘You will heal. The human body has an amazing power to heal itself if we get out of the way.’ How wonderful is that?”

She then partnered with Dr. Jennifer Civitella and Nurse Practitioner Meliea Miller at Antrim Medical Group, and later began physical therapy with Kathy Scott of the MCH Rehabilitation Department. Rosamond credits Kathy’s fully engaged, respectful approach to care as a turning point in her recovery.

“Kathy’s first question at each of our appointments is, ‘What do I need to know?’ That simple question has given me permission to be completely honest, allowing us to work together as true partners in healing. She has made me believe that I can and will heal. Bless her and her amazing team of care providers!”

What Don has to say

A Journey of Hope: A Story of Resilience and Collaborative Care

Don Nalette of Jaffrey has always enjoyed life’s adventures, from practicing long-range shooting and building vintage firearms to peaceful kayaking trips. After years of hauling pre-cast concrete, he was enjoying retirement—until last year, when his life took an unexpected turn.

“I admit I’d been putting off colonoscopies for years,” Don reflects. “Turns out I should have listened to my doctor.”

When Don finally scheduled a colonoscopy, Dr. Michael Gilbert of Monadnock Gastroenterology Associates discovered tumors causing a blockage. Due to the severity of his condition, Don was scheduled for surgery with Dr. Brian Kwitkin of Monadnock Surgical Associates the very next morning.

“Everything happened so fast,” Don recalls, “but I was treated so well by everyone—from the doctors to the nurses. They were all so pleasant, encouraging, and professional.”

He especially appreciated the calm and welcoming atmosphere of Monadnock Community Hospital, which allowed him to receive attentive, personal care in a private room.

After 12 challenging chemotherapy sessions under the care of Dr. Eric Bonnem in the MCH Oncology and Infusion Therapy Center, Don is making remarkable progress. Initially, doctors estimated only a 20% chance of full recovery. However, after liver surgery at Dartmouth Health, his care team is now hopeful for a full recuperation.

“I’m so grateful to the team at MCH for their care and professionalism,” Don says. “They took good care of me.”

Now, with new possibilities on the horizon, Don is looking forward to getting back to the hobbies that bring him joy.
