[post_content] => In the heart of Peterborough, New Hampshire, Monadnock Community Hospital (MCH) stands as a beacon of hope and healing. As we approach Giving Tuesday, a day dedicated to generosity and community support, let's take a moment to reflect on MCH's profound impact on our community. Over the past century, MCH has been committed to providing compassionate care and making a difference in the lives of those in need.
The Community Impact of MCH
MCH has been a pillar of support for our community, with a long-standing commitment to caring for the people of Peterborough and its surrounding areas. Through our various community benefit initiatives, MCH has positively impacted the lives of countless individuals and families.
Financial Assistance Program
One of the key initiatives undertaken by MCH is our Financial Assistance Program. In 2022 alone, MCH contributed $485,000 towards this program, providing a safety net for those facing financial hardships. This program ensures that individuals in need have access to the healthcare services they require, regardless of their financial situation.
Community Programs
MCH understands the importance of community engagement and has invested $268,000 in various community programs. These programs aim to promote health and well-being, educate the community about important healthcare topics, and foster a sense of togetherness. By organizing events, workshops, and support groups, MCH actively engages with the community and addresses their specific healthcare needs.
Subsidized Health Services
Access to affordable healthcare services is crucial, and MCH recognizes this need. Through our subsidized health services, MCH has contributed $8,279,000 towards ensuring that essential healthcare services are accessible to everyone. This includes providing affordable treatments, medications, and specialized care for those who may not have the means to afford them otherwise.
Public Programs
MCH has been actively involved in public health initiatives, contributing $7,499,000 towards various programs aimed at improving the overall health of the community. These programs focus on preventive care, health education, and disease management, empowering individuals to take control of their health and well-being.
Making a Difference Through Generosity
Your generous contributions to MCH have made a significant impact on the lives of individuals and families in our community. Let's take a closer look at how your gifts have made a difference.
Financial Assistance Program:
The Financial Assistance Program has been a lifeline for many individuals and families facing financial hardships. Through your support, $485,000 was provided to those in need in 2022. This assistance has allowed individuals to receive the necessary medical care and treatments without the burden of financial stress.
New Beginnings:
MCH has witnessed the joy of new beginnings with the birth of 258 babies in 2022. Each birth is a testament to the nurturing environment provided by MCH's dedicated healthcare professionals. Your contributions have helped create a safe and supportive space for families to welcome their little ones into the world.
Emergency Department Care:
In times of crisis, MCH's Emergency Department is there for our community. In 2022, 13,596 individuals received care and support from the dedicated healthcare professionals at MCH. Your generosity has ensured that critical care is available to those who need it most, providing a beacon of hope during challenging times.
A Story of Resilience and Hope
One beneficiary of MCH's Community Benefit Program is Francis Savoie, a single father and former oil truck driver. Francis was diagnosed with severe rheumatoid arthritis and degenerative disc disease at the age of 42, which threatened his ability to work and provide for his family. However, regular infusion treatments at MCH's Oncology and Infusion Center brought relief.
"The infusion treatments really helped," says Francis, "but I had trouble affording my co-pays. MCH helped me through their Financial Assistance Program."
The compassionate staff at MCH fought for Francis, providing him with the financial support he needed to continue his treatments. The kindness and care he received at MCH gave him the support and courage to face the challenges of his medical condition.
This story is a testament to the impact MCH has had on individuals and families in our community. Your contributions, both big and small, have helped shape these stories and create a healthier, more compassionate community for generations to come.

[caption id="attachment_36630" align="aligncenter" width="780"] Mary Frances Lawler with MCH’s volunteer coordinator, Toni Gildone Photo credit: Alycia McDuff[/caption]
For over a decade, Mrs. Mary Frances Lawler has dedicated herself to MCH, accumulating an astounding 2,225 hours of service since 2012. Her presence on the MCH campus is synonymous with a warm smile and a heart full of compassion. Her service to patients and our community begins long before 2012, as she first filled her life with a career in nursing.
Living in Jaffrey, Mrs. Lawler's connection with MCH runs deep, interwoven with the hospital's history and mission of exceptional care. Her journey as a nurse traces back to her mother, who served as a night supervisor nurse at the hospital. This familial connection ignited her passion for nursing, leading her to start as a volunteer at MCH during her high school years. Determined to pursue her dreams, she worked at the 5 & 10 in Jaffrey to save for nursing school.
Her educational path took her to the Carney Hospital School for Nurses and ultimately to a bachelor's degree in Rehabilitation Nursing from St. Anselm. She then landed a 50-year nursing career, including four decades at Crotched Mountain Rehabilitation Center. Throughout her career, she garnered many nursing awards, accolades, and letters praising her kindness, dedication, and lasting impact, a testament to her exceptional skills and unwavering dedication. As a mentor, Mrs. Lawler passed on her wisdom to the next generation of nurses, instilling in them the importance of going above and beyond for patients. Beyond her professional achievements, Mrs. Lawler has given back to her community in many ways, such as receiving a 30-year pin for her work with the Red Cross's Bloodmobile.
Today, Mrs. Lawler continues her selfless journey as a volunteer in the hospital's Human Resources department. Her presence is celebrated with words like “Magnificent Amazing Resourceful Youthful, and Loyal Awesome Wonderful Loving Enthusiastic Reliable.” This spells out her name on a bulletin board, reflecting the impact she makes every day.
"I go by the rules and I don't fail," Mrs. Lawler declares with characteristic determination. Her journey has come full circle, from working as a nurse in a room next to the office where she now volunteers, showcasing her enduring bond with the hospital. Her reflection on MCH echoes its commitment to compassion and friendliness. Mrs. Lawler emphasizes that there's always a warm "good morning" from the staff, reinforcing the hospital's dedication to creating a supportive environment.
Monadnock Community Hospital proudly salutes Mary Frances Lawler for her exceptional contributions to patient care, community well-being, and support for our staff. She embodies MCH's values, and her unwavering dedication continues to inspire us all.
To join Mrs. Lawler and our incredible team of volunteers at Monadnock Community Hospital, please contact Toni Gildone, Volunteer Coordinator, at (603) 924-7191 x4190. Together, we can make a difference in our community.

Common Shoulder Problems and At-Home Solutions SeminarOctober 12, 2023 at Monadnock Community Hospital
Presenter: Dr. Shawn P. Harrington, MD, FAAPMR
Part of the Health & Wellness Seminars at Monadnock Community Hospital (MCH)
Dr. Harrington has been this community’s Physiatrist and Musculoskeletal Specialist at Monadnock Orthopaedic Associates for the past two decades. He will review common shoulder pains we all experience, some options for self-care, and reasons to seek medical consultation. This workshop is directed toward anyone with interest in or personal experience with shoulder pain, whether from wear-and-tear, an old injury, athletics, or aging. Interactive discussion is welcome.
Dr. Harrington’s practice as a board-certified Musculoskeletal Physician is grounded in thorough diagnostic evaluation and treatment with 20 years of experience. He seeks to define a problem and then offers options and choices to guide patients toward a course of treatment all parties can agree on, leading to the best possible outcome. Recognizing that not every first choice leads to success, he establishes plans with patients that help bring about their goals.
