Home Planning Consider making some modifications to your home to make it easier to navigate during recovery, especially if you are already having difficulty with these tasks: oSecure safety bars and/or handrails in your shower or bath. oSecure handrails along your stairways. oObtain a stable chair for your early recovery with a firm cushion, firm back, two arms, and a footstool for intermittent leg elevation. oObtain a toilet seat riser with arms, if you have a low toilet. oObtain a stable shower bench or chair for bathing.oRemove loose carpets, cords, or rugs. oSet up a temporary living space on the same floor because stairs may be more difficult for a month or two. oPlace commonly-used items at waist height to prevent the need to bend or climb on step stool. oPrepare a recovery center in which you place frequently used items within reach, such as book, glasses, tissues, and TV remote.oConsider buying a long-handled shoehorn,sock-aid, or Easy Reacher.
