b'TOTAL HIP REPLACEMENT What Is a Total Hip Replacement? A total hip replacement is also known as a total hip arthroplasty. During surgery the damaged bone and cartilage will be removed and replaced with prosthetic components. The head of your femur will be removed, along with the damaged cartilage in the acetabulum (surface of the hip socket). A metal femoral stem and a metal or ceramic ball placed at the top of the stem will recreate the femoral head. The acetabulum will be replaced with a metal socket that will be secured by press fit. Finally, a plastic spacer will be inserted between the new ball and socket to allow for a smooth gliding surface. Why Does My Hip Hurt?Common causes of hip pain include the following:OsteoarthritisoThis is classified as age-related wear and tear arthritis. The cartilage cushioning the bones of the hip wears away, causing the bones to rub against each other, resulting in hip pain and stiffness. Osteoarthritis usually occurs in those over 50 years of age, and often in individuals with a family history of arthritis.Rheumatoid ArthritisoRheumatoid arthritis is also known as inflammatory arthritis. This type of arthritis is an autoimmune disease in which the synovial membrane becomes inflamed and thickened. Chronic inflammation can damage cartilage, leading to pain and stiffness.Post-traumatic ArthritisoThis type of arthritis can follow a serious hip injury or fracture. The cartilage can become damaged, leading to hip pain and stiffness over time. Monadnock Community Hospital Joint Replacement Program | THA Tab 11'
