b'Preventing PneumoniaPatients generally have shallow breathing in the early postoperative period. oThis is due to effects of anesthesia, pain medications, and increased time spent in bed. Shallow breathing can lead to partial collapse of the lungs, making patient susceptible to pneumonia. You will be provided with a spirometer in the recovery room, which will train you to take deep breaths. Use the spirometer 10 times per hour while awake for the first 5 days. Hospital DischargeBefore discharge you will need to accomplish several goals, such as:Get in and out of bed and a chair by yourself. Have acceptable pain control. Be able to eat, drink, and use the bathroom. Walk with an assistive device (cane, walker, or crutches) on a level surface. Going HomeWalk slowly from the car into the house. Go up stairs leading with your non-operated leg, one step at a time. Go down stairs leading with your operated leg. Keep nightlights on. If you have a dog that might jump up, keep it in a bedroom until you are seated. Make sure you eat a balanced diet. Protein will help you with the healing process.
