From addressing mental health to combating hunger, these inspiring stories highlight the power of community connection and the difference we can make together.

A Community United

In March of 2008, Mary Drew had just begun her recovery from alcoholism and quickly realized her community needed more—more support, more education, and more compassion for those navigating addiction. Her own challenges inspired her to create a resource that she knew could make a difference, and founded Reality Check in her own quiet kitchen that same year.

Now a registerednonprofit with dedicated staff and community partnerships, Reality Check offers free, life-changing services for those facing the challenges of addiction. From leading prevention programs in schools to recovery coaching and providing a safe space for support groups to meet, the work is grounded in dignity, empathy, and the unwavering belief that recovery is possible.

A Rising Crisis, A Compassionate Response

In 2024, New Hampshire confirmed 282 overdose deaths, highlighting the urgent need for action and intervention. Our state ranks among the highest in the nation for overdose fatality rates. Organizations like Reality Check remind us that, despite the statistics, there is hope to be found, and people battling addiction can heal with the right support.

Their team provides recovery coaching, peer-led support groups, and accessible trainings for employers and community leaders. Their prevention curriculum reaches students across three local districts, teaching about the power of resilience, empathy, and healthy choices from a young age.

Investing in Recovery Saves Lives

Research shows that every $1 invested in prevention saves up to $18 in healthcare and criminal justice costs. Peer-supported recovery coaching alone improves outcomes by up to 30%. Reality Check’s Recovery Coaches help those struggling with addiction to find and sustain recovery, connect them with other vital services and resources, and offer support and guidance while they rebuild their lives

A Moment to Reflect and Act

Now is the time to stand with our neighbors on the path to healing. Join Reality Check for their Overdose Vigil and Hike for Recovery on Saturday, August 2 at Pack Monadnock. This event is a tribute to lives lost, a celebration of resilience, and a call to action for all of us.

“We are only truly successful if we help others be successful,” says Mary. That’s the heart of Reality Check—and the spirit of our community.
