“Not only can MIH bridge gaps to help more people access quality healthcare, it is a bridge that travels both ways, by allowing us to be the eyes and ears of PCPs with a remote, but hands-on approach.”

Monadnock Community Hospital (MCH) is breaking new ground with its innovative approach to EMS education. The EMS Student MIH Experience Program is designed to give paramedic students from New Hampshire Technical Institute (NHTI) an immersive, hands-on opportunity to explore the growing field of Mobile Integrated Healthcare (MIH).

Led by board-certified community paramedics Joshua Patrick and Thomas Dardas, MCH’s MIH program has earned national recognition for its impact on population health, cost reduction, and enhanced patient care. This program offers students a first-hand look into a rapidly evolving healthcare model that goes beyond traditional emergency medical services.

A New Perspective on Patient Care

For many participating students, their experience with MCH’s MIH team has been nothing short of eye-opening. Unlike traditional emergency-focused EMS roles, community paramedicine emphasizes preventative care, chronic disease management, and building long-term relationships with patients.

As Joshua Patrick explains, “Spending time with us helps the students understand how we prevent emergencies, keep people healthy, and help prevent them from falling through the cracks in the healthcare system. It’s a different side of the coin that they don’t necessarily see in traditional EMS training.”

One student, Justin, found this experience to be particularly insightful. “I loved it,” he shared. “Emergency medicine is ‘go, go!’ But this was nice in the sense of providing calm, quality-focused patient care based on the patient’s individual needs. Josh was great and helped me gain a better understanding of what MIH actually does and the benefit it can provide to any community regardless of size or demographic.”

Bridging Gaps in Healthcare

Thomas Dardas highlighted the program’s dual role in supporting patients and healthcare providers: “Not only can MIH bridge gaps to help more people access quality healthcare, it is a bridge that travels both ways, by allowing us to be the eyes and ears of PCPs with a remote, but hands-on approach.”

During their clinical rotations, students accompany MCH’s MIH team into patients’ homes, gaining experience in delivering a range of services including preventative care, chronic disease management, and post-hospitalization follow-up. This unique perspective exposes students to a healthcare model that focuses on long-term well-being and proactive care rather than reactive emergency response.

Inspiring Future EMS Professionals

For many, this program has expanded their understanding of patient care and inspired them to consider careers in community paramedicine, where they can play a vital role in keeping people healthy and out of the hospital. The EMS Student MIH Experience Program aims to cultivate this interest, encouraging students to start similar programs in their own communities.

A Commitment to Continued Innovation

Monadnock Community Hospital plans to continue offering the EMS Student MIH Experience Program annually, reinforcing its commitment to innovative healthcare solutions. Patrick summed up his hopes for the future: “I hope this is the first of many, many summers of training and inspiring future EMS professionals.”
