[0] => Diaper rash is a common condition that affects infants and toddlers, causing discomfort and irritation. At Monadnock Community Hospital, we provide expert care to soothe and treat diaper rash effectively. Diaper rash can result from prolonged exposure to wet or dirty diapers, friction, and sensitivity to products. Our pediatricians offer personalized care to ensure your baby's skin stays healthy and rash-free.
Common Symptoms of Diaper Rash
Redness and tenderness in the diaper area
Swelling and warmth of the skin
Small red bumps or spots
Fussiness or discomfort, especially during diaper changes
Effective Treatments for Diaper Rash
At Monadnock Community Hospital, we offer a range of treatments to alleviate diaper rash. This includes gentle cleansing of the affected area, using barrier creams to protect the skin, and recommending diaper changes more frequently. We also provide guidance on selecting hypoallergenic products to prevent future occurrences.
Home Care
Change diapers frequently, about every hour, and change as soon as it is wet or soiled.
Increase air exposure by leaving your baby’s bottom exposed to air as much as possible. When the diaper is on, fasten it loosely to allow air to circulate between the diaper and the skin.
Rinse the skin with warm water. Avoid washing with soap after each diaper change as it can damage the skin. If you use soap, choose a mild soap (such as Dove) and only use it after bowel movements. Avoid store-brand wipes that contain perfumes or alcohol, which can irritate the skin further. Instead, use a warm washcloth or make your own wipes by moistening paper towels with plain warm water and storing them in a zip-lock bag for short periods.
For nighttime care, use disposable diapers that are loosely fastened. Apply a barrier ointment such as A&D, Aquaphor, or Vaseline to protect the skin overnight.
Other Recommendations
Apply a good barrier ointment between diaper changes to protect the skin.
Use a cotton ball to dab plain Maalox on any open, raw areas. Let it dry, then apply barrier ointment.
Mix barrier ointment and Maalox in a plastic bag for easy application.
If yeast is suspected, apply Lotrimin or Micatin sparingly four times a day.
Contact our office if there is no improvement in 4-5 days.
Preventing Diaper Rash
Prevention is key to maintaining healthy skin. Ensure frequent diaper changes to keep the area dry and clean. Use mild, fragrance-free products, and let your baby have diaper-free time to air out the skin. Regular check-ups with our pediatricians can help you manage and prevent diaper rash effectively.
When to Seek Medical Attention
If the diaper rash persists for more than a few days, worsens, or is accompanied by fever or other symptoms, it’s important to seek medical advice. Our experienced pediatric team at Monadnock Community Hospital is here to provide the care and support your baby needs.
