You most likely will need assistance from a walker. Preventing PneumoniaPatients generally have shallow breathing in the early postoperative period.oThis is due to the effects of anesthesia, pain medications, and increased time spent in bed. Shallow breathing can lead to partial collapse of the lungs, making you susceptible to pneumonia. You will be provided with a spirometer in the recovery room, which will train you to take deep breaths. Use the spirometer 10 times per hour while awake for the first 5 days.
